Prayer Target: Breaking the Stronghold of Afrikaner Nationalism

Afrikaner nationalism is the force that shaped SA history for the past 70-odd years. Their search for self-rule and independence was however not much different than those of other former (British) colonies. Nor is it much different than other nations' occupation of new land and the accompanying wars with/ driving out /domination of the indigenous peoples who lived there. The difference is that perhaps they drove national pride too far.

Based on a covenant that their forefathers made with God in 1838, Afrikaner nationalists proclaimed themselves to be the chosen nation with SA as their promised land. The covenant read that if God helped them in a battle against the Zulus, they would proclaim that day as a holy day (Day of the Vow - 16 Dec) and also build a church to commemorate it.

In 1938 the Afrikaner 'Broederbond' (a secret Brotherhood) arranged a symbolic nationwide ox-wagon trek (journey), to culminate on the Day of the Vow, to hill overlooking Pretoria. On this day they laid the foundation stones of "the church of the nation" (i.e. Voortrekker Monument). This event greatly stirred up Afrikaner pride but also bitterness, strife, division, hatred and bigotry.

Leaders at the time were also deeply influenced by Hitler's policies & doctrines and German Nazism (and Aryanism) was at the core of the entrenchment of Afrikaner nationalism. The Voortrekker Monument is a replica of a museum in Leipzig, Germany. The monument contains many symbols rooted in Egyptian occultism such as tapestries depicting a dragon and the goddess of victory, a mother/child statue, triangular cornea, etc. The building has an opening in the roof that was designed to let a sun ray fall exactly on the face of the sun-god on the altar, on the Day of the Vow. According to Egyptian mythology, this calls back the spirit of Osiris who died and was resurrected. This monument acts as a channel for the spirit of Osiris to manifest. Whether in ignorance or not I cannot say, but the forefathers have raised up an altar to a demonic spirit, since all the symbolism depicts it to be a temple/shrine of a deity.

Today many thousands of Afrikaners (hopefully in ignorance) proudly and in the spirit of religious Afrikaner nationalism, still take the annual pilgrimage to the monument - even though the day is no longer officially recognized as such by the government. Though Afrikaner Nationalists are in the minority today, they still actively campaign for independence and self-determination.

My concern in writing this is not for the minority politics of SA, as not all Afrikaans speaking folk vie for the Afrikaner nationalists; many lie in the center and on both sides of the political spectrum. My concern is for the hundreds of thousands of South Africans under spiritual bondage and curse as a result of the sins of their forefathers. National pride and bigotry (fed and matured by decades of propaganda) are deeply entrenched and not many are willing to acknowledge or repent of the sins of their fathers.

Let us pray:

Lord, thank you for the blood of Jesus over us and the protection and position it gives us in You. You say in Ex 34:6-7 "........The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children's children to the third and the fourth generation."

Father, it is only You that can open the eyes of the blind; it is only You that can soften a heart of stone and hatred; it is only You, by Your Spirit, that can reveal sins of the Afrikaner fathers to the children. We ask that you give Your love, wisdom and protection to those people/ministries through who You have chosen to do this.

In the name of Jesus we come against the principalities, powers, evil spirits and human agents who have employed cult philosophies and ideologies behind the scenes. They have used social, economic, political and religious institutions for so-called self-promotion and self-preservation of the Afrikaner at the expense of other people. They used Your word to justify their actions of "divine election and predestination" of the white Afrikaner nation and created divisions in the government and people of the country.

Father, protect and shield the South African nation from further defilement and from deceitful and lying spirits. Release them from the demonic roots of bitterness, pride, resentment and latent childhood wounds. Father, we come before you on behalf of the South African nation. We pray that you raise Daniels in the nation who can identify with the iniquity of their people - Daniels who will humble themselves, seek Your face, repent and request that these sins be removed from the nation and that the curse will be turned into a blessing over the nation, in the mighty name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

Amen
