Belem Missions Trip

(Sep 23 to Oct 3, 2002)

DAY 6 (Mon, Sep 30, 2002)

The morning meeting was intended as a question and answer session for Randy Clark and Bill Johnson, with both American and Brazilian pastor's present. However, the logistics of doing this turned out to be a bit tricky, so it was "cut short" and the US team was invited to pray for the Brazilians. The Lord lead me to this one lady who had asked a question about word of knowledge and how to discern one. He told me to lay hands on her and impart the prophetic into her. The instant I laid hands on her, she began to shake mildly under the power. As soon as I said the word "prophecia" (sp??), the power of God increased visibly on her. She ended up on the floor for a long time, shaking under the power. She was still down when the team left, half an hour later. I felt like that was a divine appointment for me to impart and call forth the prophetic in her. I hope I will get to hear what God does in her life after this.

The morning prayer time was very powerful, as seemed to be the norm for the impartation and filling prayers for this trip. It was a lot of fun to pray that way.

We split into four teams for the evening meeting and I was in Bill Johnson's group. The worship was incredible, it seemed to usher in the very presence of God. Bill's teaching was great. Then he prayed and released the team to move through the room praying impartation for faith and miracles and a fresh infilling of God's spirit. It seems like God's power simply oozed out of us (all of the team members) into anyone who we touched. There were bodies everywhere as people fell out under the power. It was electrifying. Then Bill suddenly changed the tone and directions of the meeting. He asked people who had come to the meeting in need of a healing to check out their bodies and see if God had healed them during the impartation. About 80 raised their hands to indicate they'd been healed. (I think there were about 400 people present, so that was a pretty big percentage, e.g, 20%.) Then Bill asked the team to come up front and asked for those who needed healing in their bodies to come up to the team (there were 10 of us) for prayer.

This is where the meeting got very frustrating for me. It went from power to chaos. I could not seem to find an interpretor and no one at this meeting seemed to understand my pronunciation for my few Portuguese phrases. I was having great deal determining what was going on, what people wanted prayer for and whether or not they were healed. As the evening progressed, I got more and more frustrated.

I had a few neat experiences but did not really enjoy them much because I felt so frustrated. For instance, once man pointed at his stomach and wanted prayer. So I began to pray, but as I prayed, I saw a picture of a heart being viewed under a medical scope, like the sort of thing you see in medical movies. It was beating and I was looking at a vein and suddenly it was fat and malformed at one point, like blood was pooling in it. I began praying what I was seeing and when I got to the malformed vein, I heard the word 'aneurysm,' so I began praying along those lines and commanding the blood vessel to be repaired. I could see changes in the picture as I prayed, so I just prayed what I saw and did not stop praying until the picture looked normal again. At the end of the prayer, an interpreter passed me, so I asked the interpretor for help. They had a brief discussion with the person I'd been praying for, and then told me that the person came for prayer for an aneurysm and for heart problems. Of course, there was not any way to actually verify that a healing had occurred, so I was not able to count that as a healing in the statistics. Still, it was a neat experience.

I had a similar experience a few minutes later with another person, a lady. It looked like she was pointing to her uterus (I had prayed for a lot of ladies with problems in their reproductive system). I assumed that was what she was requesting prayer for. But as I prayed, I started to see a commercial (a cartoon) that used to be on TV a lot for acid reflux disease. (This was during a season when the pharmacy companies were doing a lot of commercials for their products and this commercial modified the words to an Elvis Presley song (Heartbreak hotel) and called it "heartburn hotel.") I saw the commercial in my mind's eye, so I began praying for acid reflux disease. I started commanding the stomach to secrete the right amount of stomach acid, etc. When we were done praying another interpretor walked by.. I grabbed him and got a quick translation. Digestive problems and burning in the esophagus were indeed what the lady had wanted prayer for. However, she was unable to tell if there was any change in her condition, because it only bothered her starting about an hour after she ate. So I believe I got another visual word of knowledge about how to pray. But again, I could not verify whether or not any healing had occurred.

(These words were significant to me because they came in a visual way. I normally get words by sensing or feeling the pain, not visually. It seems like the Lord's sense of humor that He used me to get the testimony out for the lady who'd had the word of knowledge that lead to the angel removing the tumor earlier that day. Now, suddenly I was getting visual words of knowledge when I prayed.)

It was a disappointing night for me because there was only one verifiable healing of all the people I prayed for, a lady who had been unable to turn her head due to neck pain. God removed the pain and restored complete mobility. I ended up feeling a bit discouraged from that evening. I remember thinking to myself, I should not feel this way. I should be happy for the lady who was healed and for all who were touched powerfully during the impartation time. But I was discouraged non the less. I am not sure if this was spiritual warfare or sheer exhaustion. To make matters worse, the church we were at did not feed the team. Usually they give us some type of light snacks after the meeting. So I was discouraged and I was hungry.

When I got back to my room, I found that there was some sort of dysfunction with the toilet and an unpleasant urine smell was in the room just outside of the bathroom door. I remembered thinking that things just were not going well that night. (When I woke in the morning, I noticed the smell on the way to the bathroom but noticed there was not any smell in the bathroom itself. I was not so exhausted and could think more clearly and I realized this may be a demon instead of a toilet failure. So I rebuked the spirit and the smell left. At the same time, that feeling of discouragement that had settled over me the night before lifted and I felt fine again.) I share this story to make people aware that there is spiritual warfare on these type of trips ... when we advance God's kingdom we are ripping down the enemy's kingdom and the enemy fights back to attempt to protect his turf.
