Psalm 78:23 (Thursday March 12, 1998)

I am almost hesitant to share this story, as I am not sure you will believe me. (I am not sure I'd believe it if someone else wrote this.) But it is a true story.. and for the sake of my friend Mary, I feel I have to share it...

It was a beautiful morning when I left for work.. so I did not think about taking an unbrella. However, it started raining late that afternoon. I got stuck very late at work, and was unable to leave until after 8:00 PM. I had also brought my very expensive laptop to work that day... the machine cost over $3400 when I bought it about 6 or 7 monthes ago, but I saw a comperable one at Frys electronics for about $1995.00 last weekend.

You may have noticed that laptops do not like to get wet...

Well, here is 8:00 PM (the only department store in the financial district closes at 7:00 PM), so I can't purchase an umbrella. I began to consider leaving my laptop at work, but we've had some thefts lately, so I didn't feel safe doing that. The computer case is NOT waterproof and I didn't have an umbrella or a plastic bag... so I began puzzling over how I would get my laptop home safely.

As I was pondering this, the Lord spoke to me and told me not to worry about it, that it would not rain on me. So I left the building and began my 10 minute walk to the BART station. It began to sprikle lightly as I got to the station enterence, but not enough to wet my laptop.

"Thank you Lord!", I prayed silently, and ducked into the BART enterence. I had to wait about 10 to 15 minutes for a train and then had a 10 minute ride to my West Oakland station. When I left the station, I had another 10 minute walk to where my car was parked.

As God promised, it was not raining... not a drop was falling on me. It was pretty dark out... not a whole lot of street lights where I was walking. Then I passed a puddle a few feet away from me and noticed a whole bunch of rain drops splashing in it.. as if it was raining fairly heavily. I thought to myself, "That's odd". I passed another puddle about two feet away and noticed the same thing again. Then I passed under a street light and could see a whole bunch of rain (much more than a drizzle) -- yet not a single drop was landing on me. I finally figured out that there was a 4 or 5 foot diameter around me where no rain was falling, but it was falling everywhere else.. almost as if God had put a giant umbrella over my head. Both my laptop and myself stayed perfectly dry, but everything around me, including the ground I was walking on, was getting pretty wet.

I got to my car and climbed in. Rain was hitting the windshield and I turned my wipers on. I sat there for a minute or two in disbelief.. how was it possible that I'd stayed perfectly dry in this heavy of a rain? Then I remembered to thank God and drove home.

When I got home, there was a card in the mail from Mary. Enclosed was a check for $78.23 made out to my ministry, GodSpeak International. The attached note said I'd be receiving a bill for percisely that amount. But God spoke to me and said, "Go look up Psalm 78:23." So I did. Here is what it said:

Yet he gave a command to the skies above and opened the doors of the heavens;

The next few verses when on to say:

He rained down manna for the people to eat, he gave them the grain of heaven. 25Men ate the bread of angels; he sent them all the food they could eat.

There it was in pain print... God commanding the skys above and sending rain (yet none fell on me). And this dicussion was in the context of God providing our needs and taking care of us.. and He'd certainly taken good care of me to get my laptop home safely and dry. Then the Lord spoke to me again and told me that He is trustworthy and I could always trust Him to provide the needs of the ministry.. that He had raised it up and would take good care of it. Wow.

I don't think I've ever had anything like this happen to me... imagine walking through the rain and having a supernatural umbrella over your head keeping you perfectly dry! Wow!
