God's Practical Joke

(Thursday April 23, 1998)

It was a Thursday morning and I often take my laptop to work with me on Thursdays. It has been raining all week and the weatherman predicted rain for today too. I was on my way out of the house, to go to work. This commute entails a 20 minute drive to the BART station, a 10 minute walk from where I park my car to the BART station, a 10 minute ride on BART and then another 10 minute walk from the BART station to my office... so I do a fair amount of walking in my commute. Since it was supposed to rain, I grabbed my umbrella. God spoke to me...

"Teresa, it is not going to rain... leave your umbrella at home."

"Lord," I replied, "I have my laptop today.. I really don't mind carrying the umbrella even if I don't need it.. I'd rather be safe that sorry.."

"Teresa, if I tell you it is not going to rain, then you don't need your umbrella to be 'safe'."

"Yes, but I'm not postive this is your voice and this is a $4,000 dollar laptop. I don't want to take any chances with it.. it will get ruined if it get's wet."

"Teresa, can you trust Me to correct you if you step out to obey what you believe is My voice when I have not so spoken to you...?"

"Hum.. I guess so Lord... but I really don't mind carrying the umbrella even if I won't need it."

"I am asking you to obey me and leave the umbrella at home.. you will not need it, it won't rain today."

"Ok Lord, I am going to trust you and leave the umbrella at home.. please correct me (real quick) if this really isn't Your voice..."

As it turned out, I made it to work just fine. No rain at all. I started to feel good about trusting God and not taking the unbrella. I at at my desk, on the 8th floor of a skyscraper, and was working. Suddenly I noticed raindrops hitting my window. That did not seem fair to me, God had explicitely told me it would not rain (and made me leave my umbrella at home), yet here it was raining.

"God," I said, "This is not fair. You told me it was not going to rain."

He said, "Teresa, it is NOT raining."

"Those sure look like raindrops to me" I replied.

"Trust Me. it is NOT raining."

"Ok God ... I trust you.. I guess that is not rain on my window... just looks like it."

Just then the window washer let himself down from the window above me and waved at me... it wasn't rain after all.. just splashes from the window above he'd been cleaning.

Then God said to me "Gottya!"
