Learning to Obey When It Doesn't Make Sense

(Jan 30, 1998)

Yesterday I was commuting to work, and I was trying to get to work early that day. As I walked from my car to the BART (monterail/subway) station, I saw two trains pull up and leave. I wanted to rush, because I knew if I missed this third train I would have a 20 minute wait for the next one.

Just as I got to the esculator and started to ride it up to the platform... I hear the train arrive. People begin scurrying up the esculator to catch it. I want to rush up with everyone else, but God speaks to me and says "No, stay put."

"But God," I argue, "If I hurry I'll make the train and if I miss it I'll have a 20 minute wait."

"Stay put," the Lord repeats, "Trust Me."

Staying put was the hardest thing for me to do.. I'm a 'well trained' San Francisco commuter, and every fiber of my being wanted to rush up the esculator.

"Teresa," the Lord said, "If you want to hear My voice, then you must obey Me, even when My commands to you don't seem to make sensei to you.."

I continued to stay planted on my step on the esculator even through I really wanted to rush up (along with everyone else) and catch this train. I mentally resigned myself to the 20 minute wait and assumed God had a good reason.. but it was so hard for me to stay planted and not rush up to the platform. It literally took a great deal of effort and self control to keep from rushing up the esuclator to catch that train.

The train was pulling out just as the esculator deposited me on the platform. But it was not the train going my direction... it was the train on the other side of the platform. So there really had been no need to rush after all. My train arrived a few minutes later and I hopped on it.

It was surprising to me how hard it had been to obey God when His direction did not make sense to me. If He'd simply told me that what I heard was the train going the other direction, it would have been easy to obey Him. But when He said to trust Him when His directions did not make sense, it was much harder for me.

But God wants us to obey Him because we trust Him, so He sometimes will give us instructions that don't make sense to us to test us and see if we will obey Him, instead of simply explaining things to us.
